Kidney Transplant
A kidney transplant is a surgical treatment used to treat renal failure. In this technique, a
healthy kidney from a deceased (dead) individual or from a living donor who is a match is
used to replace a diseased or failing kidney. Filtering out waste metabolites from the body
and purifying blood by excreting waste through urine are the kidneys' primary tasks. This is
how the kidneys support the body's electrolyte equilibrium. When the kidneys are injured or
not functioning properly, waste builds up in the body, which can make someone pretty ill.
There are some things that can harm your kidneys. For those with acute kidney failure,
dialysis is the treatment of choice; for those with chronic kidney failure, the only treatment
option is a kidney transplant.
